As an artist you are often forced to outsource various skills. In most cases, photos of your own work or exhibition views are produced by professional photographers. Subsequently, the editing of the photos or the design of the layout are taken over by graphic designers. Mostly you are satisfied with the result, but often you are not.
The "perspectives" of the photographers or the graphic designers do not always correspond to those of the artists. On the one hand the artist is required to articulate precisely his/her "point of view" or to bring the different components (image-typo-layout) into a form by themselves.
In the course, we will try to figure out the best solution for a possible documentary, and subsequently also to be "fit" for following submissions in the future (scholarships, artist in residence programs, competitions, prizes, etc . ...).
- Starting with a content discussion of the work.
- How much and what is necessary in a documentation for the viewers?
- Which image information is relevant for a documentation to understand a work itself?
- What is the right perspective of a work in the photo?
- Does a room installation always needs space in a documentation?
- Is an object or a sculpture only comprehensible in a documentation as a whole, or is a small part of the object, image or the sculpture enough?
- How does a layout support the documented work?
- What about typography?
- Can it be supportive or is it an essential information carrier?
- How much text, if any, needs the documented work around them understand?
These and other questions should be discussed practically in the course. The course is indirectly connected to the ZKF (Ortsbezogene Kunst), where the individual presentations of the students also can be starting points for the course.
Our resources of computers (3 iMac) and cameras are limited in our department. It would be necessary for each participant to bring their own computer with installed Adobe programs (Photoshop - Indesign) and a digital camera.
